Storing electricity from photovoltaics: everything you need to know

Published

Self-sufficiency, stability, energy independence and sustainability. This is the goal of many companies, for which an excellent solution for balancing energy loads is the use of electricity storage devices. What should be the energy storage system in the enterprise? What are the differences between battery savers used by households and electricity storages tailored to the needs of businesses? These questions will be answered, among other things, in the article, and we will begin with the definition of energy storage itself. What exactly is it and what is its function and application in the industry?

Electricity storage - what is it?

An electricity storage device is a stand-alone device or set of devices for storing energy in any form without generating emissions that burden the environment so that it can be reused at least partially.

An energy storage device is a device for storing electricity, for example, energy produced in photovoltaic devices. This energy can then be used to power machinery and equipment in companies or households. Due to the different range of energy needs and its storage by individual users or companies, energy storage devices differ in battery capacity. It all depends on the energy needs. Another factor that distinguishes energy storage devices on the market is the type of cells, among which the most popular are: lithium-ion batteries, lead-acid batteries or gel rechargeable batteries, among others.

Where can an energy storage unit be used in combination with a solar power plant?

One of the companies that now also offers comprehensive energy storage options in Slovenia is the German company TESVOLT, a technological leader in the field of energy storage systems for commercial and industrial purposes.

The company was founded in 2014 and has built Europe's first Giga power storage plant. How is TESVOLT different from competing manufacturers and suppliers? A first-class group of investors backed by EU funds and grants, driving rapid growth in the global energy storage market, which is currently growing at +28% a year. The certified partner of specialized energy storage systems of the TESVOLT brand in Slovenia is the company Geo Energy.

What are the possibilities of using electrical energy storage in industry, commercial or production? What can they all be used for and which areas can they significantly optimize?

TESVOLT energy storage units are the right solution for more than 20 application areas:

  • production,
  • agriculture,
  • logistics,
  • retail,
  • for energy supply in small and medium-sized enterprises (MSEs),
  • industry,
  • charging infrastructure for e-mobility,
  • energy utilities,
  • municipalities and public institutions,
  • hotels,
  • data centers,
  • stadiums and cultural institutions.

TESVOLT has developed and successfully implemented more than 3,000 energy projects with its energy storage systems worldwide. Among them are projects such as:

  • powering Europe's largest EV charging park in Norway (a multifunctional solution to reduce peak loads);
  • optimization of hybrid diesel generator systems in a gold mine in Australia.

How to choose an electricity storage tank for business?

It all depends on the volume of energy needs and the purpose of the storage tank. It is necessary to answer the question of what is the purpose of energy storage:

  • reducing the amount of electricity produced in power plants;
  • increasing the share of own electricity consumption from renewable energy sources in the closed cycle: photovoltaic device — energy storage — consumer,
  • energy collection in case of lack of supply or failure of the electrical system.

What criteria should the choice of energy storage be based on in case of demand due to the launch of a business or the operation of a large industrial plant?

Energy storage for the company - what are the parameters and what are the advantages?

Storage of electricity from a solar power plant for an enterprise must meet several important parameters, such as:

  • increased capacity and capacity of the battery;
  • protection against overload or overheating of galvanic cells (for industrial use, protective measures are more stringent);
  • the increased power of the inverter, which converts direct current into alternating current, which is used to power equipment in the office or production machinery in the enterprise (the power of the inverter must be adapted, among other things, to the size of the plant for generating electricity from the RES and to the needs of electricity);
  • significantly longer energy storage life, expressed in full charge and discharge cycles provided for energy storage (industrial energy storage devices must be capable of at least 6 000 full cycles);
  • the possibility of using the battery at 100% of its capacity, i.e. the so-called depth
  • discharges; the rate of filling and discharging of the energy storage device (so-called speed C);
  • advanced functions such as voltage regulation, frequency regulation, reactive energy compensation, three-phase backup power supply;
  • advanced energy storage monitoring and control system combined with intelligent measurement of energy consumption and production;
  • the design of the energy storage, which is characterized by large dimensions, for example, due to the capacity of the battery (batteries used in industry are usually placed in racks or in a container, which includes, among other things, ensuring adequate ventilation and cooling of the unit);
  • the highest standards of quality and safety, confirmed by certificates awarded by independent accreditation bodies.

Choosing the right electricity storage should therefore be a well-thought-out strategy. Before making a purchase decision, several parameters must be taken into account in the analysis, and a company that deals with the distribution and installation of energy storage systems can best help you with this. In this case, it is recommended to entrust the choice of a suitable feeder to professionals. An energy audit of the enterprise, determination of electricity needs, verification of the capacity of a photovoltaic device or verification of connection conditions will help. Which electricity storage should you choose? Is there a universal answer?

TESVOLT offers the world's leading energy storage solutions for commercial and industrial applications. In doing so, it supports important trends in renewable energy and electromobility and lays the foundation for the global energy transition. Geo Energy is an official partner of TESVOLT in Slovenia, which, together with a team of experts, provides you with specialized solutions for various fields of application and first-class service of energy storage systems in combination with a solar power plant.

TESVOLT energy storage - what is special about it?

TESVOLT energy storage units are characterised by excellent performance and lower total cost of operation (LCOS) compared to competitive products. Some of the key features that distinguish Tesvolt energy storage systems include:

  • saving on electricity costs by reducing peak loads; solution for s
  • storage of energy from renewable sources;
  • safety of use, provided by a dedicated emergency power supply.

How to get funds for an electricity storage tank?

Companies wishing to obtain favourable financing in Slovenia for the purchase of a device for the production of electricity from renewable energy sources and an electricity storage tank have several options. The Eco Fund offers a loan for the purchase of devices for the production of electricity from renewable energy sources including a battery storage tank, at the same time green credits are available from various banks. In the autumn, however, a public appeal by Borzen for a grant is expected. An additional €150 million will be made available in the form of grants. Each recipient will be able to receive a maximum of 25 million grants or 45% of the total investment cost. The maximum amount of aid expressed in EUR/kW of the installed capacity of the generating plant and in EUR/kW or in EUR/kWh of the installed power or capacity of the energy storage facility will be determined in the public call
